The grim death toll on everest is becoming impossible to ignore, says rachel nuwer. In fact, the world's 14 highest mountains all have death zones. There's been over 200 climbing deaths at the mountain and many of the mount everest bodies remain as a grave reminder for those who follow.

The area between camp four at 26,240 feet and the summit is known as the death zone. oxygen levels are so low in the death zone that climbers cannot stall for long before completing the summit and coming back down.

Most fatalities on everest this year were due to acute mountain sickness (ams), or exhaustion, one of the main effects of ams. Ahead of the opening of the climbing season this autumn, authorities and climbing guides are unsure if or when more bodies will be brought. An international team of scientists and mountain climbers joined national. But if climbers want to summit mount everest, the tallest peak in the world at 29,029 feet (8,848 meters or 5.5 miles) above sea level, they have to brave what's known as the death zone. this is the area with an altitude above 8,000 meters, where there is so little oxygen that the body starts to die.
